Cleaning Upholstery at Home: Taking Care of Upholstered Furniture

By May 31, 2022 No Comments

Who doesn’t want to come home to beautifully upholstered furniture? Something you can look forward to relax on, something you can proudly welcome your friends home to? But if only maintaining upholstered furniture was as easy as loving it! Upholstered furniture can be a pain to maintain and clean properly even if you use a proper upholstery cleaner for the same, so what can you do? Here’s how you can take care of, and clean your upholstered furniture in your home, be it leatherette, leather or fabric-

If you have leatherette upholstery

Leatherette is thankfully quite simple to clean, since it does not absorb most stains or particles.

  • You can always use a multipurpose cleaner, or an upholstery cleaner, whichever you have with you, dip a clean towel in it and wipe the upholstery thoroughly with it.
  • Once it’s dry, take a dish of water and use another clean towel to wipe it down once more.
  • You can use acetone to remove stubborn stains on leatherette, but use it in moderation to avoid wearing out the material too much.
  • There are also many companies these days that offer in home upholstery cleaning service, so don’t hesitate to hire them if you want to really deep clean upholstery once in a while.

If you have leather upholstery

  • If you don’t want to go in for professional sofa cleaning for your leather couch, don’t worry. Keeping leather upholstery clean isn’t that hard.
  • It’s a good idea to invest in a leather conditioner that you can use on the furniture a couple of times a year, for best results. When you’re doing regular cleaning, be sure to vacuum the furniture well and wipe it with a dry, clean towel.
  • You may also use a carpet and furniture cleaner but keep in mind that you must use only a cleaner that is suited for leather furniture as well.

If you have fabric upholstery

  • Vacuuming regularly is also a good practice if you have fabric upholstery. This will make it easier for you when you attempt a thorough clean. Also use a brush with soft bristles to go over the fabric now and then.
  • Invest in a good quality couch upholstery cleaner. Be sure to spray this gently and at a slight distance from the fabric, to avoid staining it. Use a clean and dry cloth, preferably microfiber, to wipe with light pressure all over the fabric, going in circles.
  • You can also wash fabric upholstery once in a while, but ensure that it is in fact the washable kind. The label of the fabric will specify if it is. If it says X, you can only vacuum or dry clean it.

Naturally, despite knowing all this, sometimes we may not have the time to clean our own upholstery, or maybe be shaky about it. In that case, you can always call up an upholstery cleaning company and ask for a deep clean sofa service right away- thus saving you loads of time and effort!
